MediConnect

The MediConnect program (formerly the Better Medication Management System) was a 2000-01 Australian Government Budget Initiative with funding approved for the period 2000-01 to 2004-05.

MediConnect was initiated to provide a medication management system that could be used Australia-wide to ensure quality and safety for conusumers in the area of medication usage. The system was intended to help reduce adverse events with the use of medicines.

MediConnect was a development in health care. It was a secure national electronic system to help improve quality and safety in the way we managed our medicines. By drawing together information about the medicinespeople use, MediConnect ensured that doctores, pharmacists and hospitals were better able to help prevent the health problems that can be caused when medicines are used inappropriately.

The MediConnect initiative was built within the framework of Health Online: A health information Action Plan for Australia.

A successful Field Test was undertaken during 2003 in two sites, one in Ballarat (Victoria) and the other in Launceston (Tasmania).

The MediConnect Program became incorporated with the HealthConnect program in Minister Abbott's announcement of 10 March 2004.
