The North Queensland and South Brisbane e-health trials involve electronic information sharing between consumers, GPs and hospital staff (including surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses). These trials are continuing to demonstrate how technology can be used to support clinical care practices.

The North Queensland trial, which is based in and around Townsville, involves elective surgery referrals to Townsville Hospital from local, rural and remote areas. Referrals and discharge summaries are being electronically transmitted between the participating GPs and the hospital.

The South Brisbane trial continues to build a system which demonstrates the effectiveness of a shared summary electronic health record that can be viewed securely via internet by consenting patients with diabetes, their general practitioners and their nominated care teams.
