Protecting your eyes
What can you do to protect your eye health and prevent avoidable vision loss and blindness?
Good eyesight is an important part of wellbeing and a significant factor in retaining independence and quality of life as we get older. The eye’s ability to see can deteriorate for many reasons and while it is associated with the ageing process there are many interventions available. Ageing does not have to equate to vision loss. Correct early diagnosis, treatment and support can ensure eye sight is preserved. The signs of eye disease are hard to spot so having your eyes tested is a simple and vital factor in maintaining healthy eyes.
Your local eye health professionals are able to examine your vision and eye health and detect the early warning signs of eye disease. More information on eye care professionals is available under the tab Fact Sheet – Eye Care Professionals.
What if I am diagnosed with an eye disease or eye problem?
Eye health professionals will be able to advise you on a management plan and available interventions for your diagnosed eye disease or problem. There are also a number of support services for people diagnosed with an eye disease or problem. More information is available from a range of organisations, some of these are listed here.
