The Government will increase funding for aged care by $5 billion over five years. Since last Budget, the Government will deliver an additional 20,000 home care packages over the next four years for people with high level needs. More than 14,000 packages are funded in this Budget, on top of 6,000 packages released in the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook. This responds to demand for people seeking additional support to live at home longer.

This will mean that by 2021–22, more than 74,000 high level home care packages will be available, an increase of 86 per cent on 2017–18.

As well, 13,500 residential aged care and 775 Short Term Restorative Care places will be released through an Aged Care Approvals Round in 2018–19, with an additional $60 million capital investment to support access to residential aged care.

Why is this important?

The demand for home care packages to support older Australians to stay in their own home for longer continues to grow.

This measure will allow older Australians to get their approved level of care sooner.

Who will benefit?

This measure will benefit older Australians waiting to receive a home care package, including those who are already receiving services and have been assessed as needing a higher level package.

How much will this cost?

This will cost $1.6 billion from 2018–19 to 2021–22.
