This measure will provide funding through grants to a range of sports, involving both aspiring and elite athletes, and the services that support them in the lead-up to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Why is this important?

This measure will ensure Australia has the greatest possible chance of success on home soil.

Sport is a key part of promoting physical activity. It is hoped that Australian success at the upcoming Commonwealth Games will inspire Australians to be more active, resulting in better health outcomes.

During 2017, long-term strategic planning for sport in Australia will be undertaken through the development of a National Sports Plan.

Who will benefit?

Additional grant funding for sports will be used to fund services to support more than 2,000 athletes and National Sporting Organisations across Australia.

Sports will have funding maintained at existing levels until the National Sports Plan sets out a long-term plan.

How much will this cost?

This measure will cost $15.5 million in 2017–18.
