Why is this important?
MSAC has provided the Australian Government with independent expert advice on the safety, effectiveness and cost-efficiency of new medical procedures and technologies since 1998.
MSAC assesses new medical services against other interventions on the basis of safety, community outcomes and cost efficiency. MSAC’s advice enables the Government to help ensure the MBS is more effective and sustainable in the longer term.
Who will benefit?
Australians benefit through assurance that medical services listed on Medicare from MSAC recommendations are clinically effective, safe and cost-efficient. The continued funding of MSAC will also support the ongoing MBS Review, assessing each recommendation as it is made by the clinical groups, and subsequently supported by the Taskforce.
How much will this cost?
This measure will cost $44.5 million from 2017–18 to 2020–21.
