Why is this important?

  • Dedicated antivenom production saves lives and alleviates suffering of people who have received a venomous bite or sting.
  • In 2005-06, the Antivenom Production program provided funding for almost 7,000 doses to be provided to state and territory governments. It is important to ensure that the national capacity for antivenom production is maintained.
  • This measure ensures that adequate amounts of antivenom products for the treatment of venomous bites and stings peculiar to Australia continue to be available for purchase by state and territory governments.

Who will benefit?

  • Through the maintenance of antivenom production, the Australian public will benefit by having access to these products if they need them.

What funding is the Government committing to the initiative?

  • The Government has a four-year agreement with CSL for the manufacture of antivenom products at a cost of $15.1 million ($1.7 million in new funding) over the four years to 2010-11.

What have we done in the past?

  • The Government has provided $12.5 million to CSL over the last five years to ensure Australia’s supply of antivenom products.

When will the initiative conclude?

  • The current funding agreement with CSL will end in June 2011.
