Why is this important?

  • The highly competitive environment for health and medical research in Australia has meant that deserving research projects have missed out on the limited resources available. In turn, this has deterred some of Australia's most outstanding and talented researchers from pursuing careers in health and medical research in Australia.
  • In establishing this Australian Research Fellowship, the Government aims to create a scheme that:
    • reduces blockages for up-and-coming researchers and provides a viable career path, thereby retaining high level expertise in Australia,
    • attracts more world class researchers (back) to Australia,
    • fosters mentoring and collaboration amongst the best researchers,
    • stimulates early creative research in new and emerging fields.

Who will benefit?

  • The Research Fellowship Scheme will support between 50 and 60 senior research positions over its ten year life. Each of the first five years of the scheme will see approximately ten new fellows commence a five year-long research programme.
  • By the end of 2011, the scheme will be contributing to the longevity and improved quality of life for all Australians. Its contribution to the health status of our nation, our research agenda, and economic return will be ongoing.

What funding is the Government committing to the initiative?

  • The Government is committing a one off investment of $170 million to this initiative.

What have we done in the past?

  • Other fellowship funding through the National Health and Medical Research Council currently allows for 70 to 80 new and renewed fellowships every year.

When will the initiative conclude?

  • This is a one-off endowment to support the Australian Research Fellowship Scheme over the next nine years.
