Major Achievements

  • Improved access to cochlear implant speech processor upgrades for children and young adults up to the age of 21 years.
  • Establishment of the Hearing Services Consultative Committee.
  • Agreement reached with manufacturers for the supply of hearing devices with higher minimum specifications in all devices and the inclusion of additional features in behind-the-ear devices.

Challenges

  • Low uptake of Government-funded hearing services amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, compared to the general population.
  • Growth in the number of clients being fitted with a ‘top-up’ device that has additional features and usually incurs an additional cost for the client.
