Major Achievements

  • Implementation of the National Quality and Performance System for Divisions of General Practice.
  • Implementation of a key recommendation for the Senate Inquiry into hepatitis C and the blood supply in Australia, through the provision of access to recombinant clotting factors for haemophilia patients as treatment of choice.
  • Establishment of the Australian Palliative Care Outcomes Collaboration to encourage quality and effectiveness in palliative care service delivery.
  • Consolidation of the promotion, prevention and early intervention initiatives for improving community understanding and attitudes about mental health, mental illness and suicide prevention.

Challenges

  • Implementing effective departmental strategies to increase Australia’s rate of organ and tissue donation.
  • Barriers to the take-up of broadband in the health sector have included poor availability of broadband in Australia, especially in regional, rural, and remote areas; and health providers’ concern regarding internet security.
