The Department of Health and Ageing managed a number of campaigns in 2008–09 to help protect and improve the Australian community’s health. These included:

The Measure Up Campaign – provides people with the tools and understanding to make healthy lifestyle choices, to help reduce morbidity and mortality due to lifestyle related chronic disease. www.measureup.gov.au

The National Youth Alcohol Campaign ‘Drinking Nightmare’ – encourages teenagers and young adults to think about the choices they make about drinking, and the possible negative consequences of excessive alcohol consumption, to help reduce the harms associated with drinking to intoxication. www.drinkingnightmare.gov.au

National Sexually Transmissible Infections Prevention Program: Sexual Health Campaign – provides young people with important information about the transmission, symptoms, treatment and, most importantly, the prevention of sexually transmissible infections. www.sti.health.gov.au

National Skin Cancer Awareness Campaign – educates young Australians about the seriousness of, and their susceptibility to, skin cancer through sun exposure. The campaign highlights the risks associated with cumulative exposure and deliberate tanning. www.skincancer.gov.au

National Eye Health Awareness Campaign – aims to improve public awareness about the risk factors for avoidable blindness and vision loss; highlights the benefits of early detection and treatment; and informs people about the types of eye health care services available. www.australia.gov.au/eyehealth

The National Tobacco Campaign – provides information and resources to help people to successfully quit smoking, and reduce the level of tobacco use among Australians. This is a collaborative quit-smoking health initiative between Federal, State, and Territory Governments and non-government organisations. www.quitnow.info.au
