Motivation

Successful Biggest Loser finalist Pati Singe offers some advice about motivation and inspiration for living a healthier life.

Pati SingeHi, I’m Pati Singe. Before I changed my life on The Biggest Loser, I was overweight and at risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and who knows what else?

I was also setting a really bad example to the young fellas in my family – all my nephews and nieces – who I love with all my heart. I want them to grow up healthy and live a long and happy life.

So although it hasn’t always been easy, I’ve managed to reach and maintain a healthy weight and a healthy body by eating healthy food and doing daily physical activity.

How do you stay motivated?

Like I said, it isn’t always easy! But there are so many benefits to living a healthy life. Not only do I look so much better, I feel great! I’ve also reduced my risk of a whole lot of serious illnesses.

I’ve also realised how important it is to set a good example to my family. Since I’ve started having a healthier lifestyle, my whole family has started making their own changes – whether it’s a healthier family meal, or coming with me for a walk, the changes are everywhere and it’s all good!

So that’s what motivates me – I’ve made such a difference in my own life and in my family’s lives, how could I ever want to live any other way!

What’s your secret?

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is as simple as eating a healthy, balanced diet and doing enough physical activity.

That’s all it is. No secret, and no short cuts. But once you make the commitment to live a healthy life, you’ll thank yourself and your body will thank you too, by being healthier and stronger.

Believe me – if I can do it, you can do it too.

It’s also important to stay away from fad diets or starvation diets. The only way to lose weight healthily and successfully, and to keep it off in the long term, is to eat healthy food and do physical activity regularly.

Stay motivated!

Patience is the key. Don’t expect miracles overnight. It can take a while before you start to see changes.

Ask your mates and your mob to support you. Tell them how important it is for you to start living a healthy life. Who knows? They might even decide to join you!

Set yourself realistic, short-term goals and reward yourself when you get there.

Don’t overdo it – if you wear yourself out with too much physical activity too soon, you probably won’t be able to stick to it. Choose a level of physical activity that you’re comfortable with and slowly build on it.

Healthy food can taste good too!

One of the biggest mistakes I was making before I changed my life for the better was thinking that healthy food was boring food. How wrong could I be?
Salad on a fork
There is nothing better than a fresh salad, bursting with colourful ingredients. Or a platter of tropical fruit, ready to be eaten. I also love the colour and freshness of a stir fry – add a small amount of lean meat or chicken to some vegies and serve on a bed of steamed rice and you’ve got a great tasty and balanced meal. Quick, cheap and easy!

I really enjoy a good family barbecue, and this is a great way to get the whole mob eating healthy. Some lean meats, or a whole fish, some salads and fruit – everyone is so busy enjoying their food they don’t even realise it’s good for them!

It’s your body – get it moving

I used to think physical activity was boring too, but that’s because I didn’t realise how many different ways there were to be active!

A pair of running shoes
I like the gym and running, but that’s just me. Everyone needs to find what they like and what works for them. Some people like to dance, while others like to play footy. Some might kill two birds with one stone and do some household chores while they’re getting their physical activity – did you ever notice what a great work-out mowing the lawn is?

One of the nicest and easiest ways to be active is so simple – just take a brisk walk. Choose a nice spot, and take a mate along for company. Or listen to your favourite tunes while you check out the scenery.

Soon enough you’ll find that you start looking forward to your physical activity time, because it makes you feel so good.

Pati's Tips

Tip 1

The best advice I can offer? Never give up! If you miss a day of doing some physical activity or splurge on cake, don’t throw your hands up in defeat. Just put it behind you and keep on going.

Tip 2

We all enjoy a treat once in a while. However, it’s important to only have treats occasionally and not every day. Just remember – moderation is the key!

Tip 3

Worried that the routine of regular physical activity will get boring? Mix it up! Try something different. There are no rules – just get active and have some fun!
